Donor Spotlight: Society of Iranian-American Women for Education

“How am I going to pay for my higher education?” This common question is especially prevalent among international students who generally pay out-of-state tuition and are not eligible to apply for federal and state financial aid.

Nonprofit corporations, like The Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE), help support the educational pursuits of international students by investing in education. According to the SIAWE website, “SIAWE is committed to provide sustainable educational support to help secure a successful future for deserving students.”

SIAWE, a nonprofit corporation that was founded in Houston in 2001, is dedicated to supporting education and information about Iranian culture in the US. UT Austin is one of four Texas universities that SIAWE has established an endowment with, but SIAWE provides scholarships to other institutes of higher learning in Texas, too.

Spring 2013 SIAWE Award recipient, Aynaz Nahavandi, said that receiving this award allowed her to focus on her education more. “SIAWE…lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. I am one step closer to my goal. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as this award has helped me.”

Current UT students who have matriculated from a school in Iran should consider applying and will be emailed regarding the spring 2014 SIAWE award in October. For more information about other awards and financial services offered through ISSS, visit our Financial Services website.
