Cap-Gap Extension

A Cap-Gap extension is an extension of F-1 visa status and/or Post-Completion OPT work authorization.  This occurs when someone with an F-1 visa has an employment start date of October 1st and is a beneficiary of a timely filed H-1B petition requesting a change of status.

In order for ISSS to provide you with a Cap-Gap I-20, you will need to provide our office with a copy of your I-797 receipt notice from USCIS.  This is the document your company receives after they file the H-1B petition.

Please scan a copy of your receipt notice and send it to hotline@austin.utexas.edu.  We will process your Cap-Gap I-20 and then mail it to you.

Your Cap-Gap Extension will terminate if your H-1B petition is rejected, denied, or revoked.
