The International Office is holding its second ITIN drive to adequately prepare international students and scholars for the approaching 2017 tax season.
Why ITIN?
ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a taxpayer ID number for international students who are ineligible for a Social Security Number and who do not currently have an employment offer.
ITINs are necessary in order to file a tax return, which is required for those students with scholarships, fellowships, and stipends. Additionally, an ITIN is required for students to receive scholarships, fellowships, and stipends in their second year at UT if they do not have an SSN. ITIN processing generally takes about a month, so it is important to have your ITIN well before the tax filing deadline of April 15.
The international office will be holding one more ITIN drive for the fall 2016 semester:
Date: October 28, 2016
Time: 2 – 5 pm
Location: International Office
Please note appointments are required and can be made online https://world.utexas.edu/isss/ssn. Any questions can be directed to taxadvisor@austin.utexas.edu.
