Calling all musicians!
Texas Global is looking for talented musicians and singer-songwriters within UT’s international student, scholar, faculty & staff populations to sign up for a special edition of Open Mic Night at the Cactus Café.
Monday, November 18, KUT/X and the Cactus Café are partnering with Texas Global to kick off International Education Week (IEW) 2019! We hope to showcase your talent and create closer ties between the robust music community of Austin and our global population on campus.
Details
We ask that you perform a song from your native country, your travels, or that you have written/composed yourself. We prefer songs that are not in English. There will be a “house” guitar for communal use during the evening. However, if you wish to use another type of instrument, please bring it with you. Please ensure that your instrument is suitably sized for the small stage (keyboards-OK, grand pianos-NO) and are quick and easy to set up (no rock band style drum sets).
Because we want to make sure as many people as possible have the chance to get on stage, performers are limited to 1 song or 5 minutes (whichever is shorter) and no more than 2 people can perform together (no large bands).
Performers should arrive at the Cactus Café located in the Texas Union Building (UNB) at 7:30 and check in with Texas Global Staff. Performances start at 8 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m.
To be considered, please sign up by completing this online form before November 15. If we have too many submissions, we will randomly select participants and also create a waitlist. Questions? Contact iew@austin.utexas.edu.
About the Historic Cactus Café & Open Mic Night with Kacy Crowley
The Cactus Café is a live music venue and bar on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. Located in Austin, Texas, a city frequently referred to as “the live music capital of the world,” a number of well-known artists have played in the Cactus, and Billboard Magazine named it as one of fifteen “solidly respected, savvy clubs” in the United States, “from which careers can be cut, that work with proven names and new faces. The Cactus Café is programmed by public radio stations KUT 90.5 and KUTX 98.9. Keep an eye on upcoming events.
The Cactus Café is an all ages venue. It does not serve food, but offers alcoholic (with valid ID) and non-alcoholic beverages as well as coffee.
Open Mic Nights returned to the venue in 2017 with local singer-songwriter Kacy Crowley taking over the hosting and curation of the event on Monday evenings. We encourage you to return again and again to connect with the local music community!
