Sprintax is available now!
Tax season is well under way, and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is offering tax filing assistance via Sprintax for students and scholars and their dependents who are classified as “nonresident aliens for tax purposes.”
Filing your U.S. tax documents is now easier than ever with the Sprintax software for nonresident aliens. Sprintax guides users through a series of questions that automatically prepare a U.S. tax return based on the answers. The Sprintax software requires an access code to activate the software. Please visit the ISSS tax website for more detailed information and instructions.
Who has to file taxes?
Any nonresident alien for tax purposes who received U.S.-sourced income—which includes wages, scholarships, fellowships, treaty benefits or capital gains on the sale of stock, etc.—must file taxes. Even if you did not have any income during 2021, all nonresident aliens for tax purposes (including spouses and dependents) are required to file Form 8843. Sprintax will help you file all required tax documents, including Form 8843.
Is an SSN or ITIN required to file Form 8843?
You do not need an SSN or an ITIN to file Form 8843. There is a place to enter your tax identification number if you have one, but you do not need a tax identification number to file this document.
What tax services are available through ISSS?
ISSS has purchased Sprintax to help students and scholars file taxes. Sprintax also offers tax webinars and hosts a YouTube channel with great informational videos. If you have additional questions regarding Sprintax or filing taxes as a nonresident alien for tax purposes, we can assist you by email or during our Tax Preparation Drop-in Sessions.
Want more information about taxes?
ISSS has more information for resident and nonresident aliens regarding taxes on the ISSS website. You can also find answers to many frequently asked tax questions in the AskUs database.
The deadline to file taxes is April 18, 2022, so be sure to finish them early!

Hello. I’m using Sprintax to file Form 8843. On page 1 “Residency Status,” it asked me when was the first time I entered the US, which in my case was in 2017 (for a high school exchange program with a F1 visa). On page 2 “Visa Details,” it asked me to provide details of my current visa, specifically visa issue date and visa expiry date. However, I had applied for a new visa for my undergraduate study in the US, which started in 2018 and would end in 2023, and this is my current visa. However, in this case, my current visa issue date is after my first date of entering the US, so the system didn’t let me do that. What should I do? Thank you.

Hi! This is a great question for the Sprintax team. What you are entering is correct and it is an issue with their software or their instructions. On the Sprintax page, once you have logged in you can access their 24/7 chat support.
