Are you interested in doing a summer internship following your exchange program at UT Austin? Or maybe you are a Ph.D. student who has a postdoctoral research opportunity following graduation? Or maybe a degree-seeking student wanting to do a summer internship? If so, and if you are in the United States on a J-1 student visa, then J-1 Academic Training is exactly what you need to facilitate your off-campus employment!
Academic training allows J-1 students to pursue off-campus employment that aligns with the major listed on their DS-2019 form. To apply, you will need to have already secured a job. You must have Academic Training authorized before your DS-2019 expires and before you begin employment.
To find more information about academic training benefits, and to learn about the application process, please visit our Employment for J-1 Students website. The application process is recommended by your department, approved by International Student and Scholar Services, and completed in myIO.
If you have questions about academic training and your eligibility, please schedule an advising appointment with an international student advisor, exchange student advisor, or sponsored student advisor.
