Graduating in Summer? Read this!

In-Person Enrollment Required

Are you an F-1 or J-1 student? Will you be graduating this summer? If so, be prepared to enroll in enough in-person or hybrid courses this summer.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) COVID-19 guidance is expiring at the end of the Spring 2023 semester. We do not expect that SEVP will renew this guidance, which allowed students to enroll in majority-online or fully online coursework. Fully online or majority-online enrollment will no longer be permitted after Spring 2023. Based on your degree level, you will need to enroll in a certain number of in-person or hybrid courses to maintain your F-1/J-1 status.

Enrollment Requirements for Students Graduating in Summer 2023

Graduate students:

You must enroll in at least three in-person or hybrid credits. If you need fewer than three credits to graduate:

• You must submit a request for an F-1/J-1 Final Semester Reduced Course Load through myIO by June 1, the first class day of the Summer 2023 semester.
• You must enroll in at least 1 in-person or hybrid class.
• You may not enroll in more than 1 online class.

Undergraduate students:

The normal full-time enrollment requirement for undergraduate students in summer is 12 credits; 9 of these credits must be in-person or hybrid. If you need fewer than 12 credits to graduate (which is usually the case):

• You must submit a request for an F-1/J-1 Final Semester Reduced Course Load through myIO by June 1, the first class day of the Summer 2023 semester.
• You must enroll in at least 1 in-person or hybrid class.
• You may not take more than 1 online class or 3 online credits.

Not graduating in summer?

Please review the enrollment requirements for fall and spring semesters, below.

Graduate students

You must enroll in a minimum of 9 credits every fall and spring semester. At least 6 of those 9 credits must be in-person or hybrid courses.

If you are graduating in the fall or spring and need fewer than 9 credits to graduate:

• You must submit a request for an F-1/J-1 Final Semester Reduced Course Load through myIO by the first class day of your graduating semester.
• You may not take more than 1 online class or 3 online credits.

Undergraduate students:

You must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits every fall and spring semester. At least nine of those 12 credits must be in-person or hybrid courses.

If you are graduating in fall or spring and need fewer than 12 credits to graduate:

• You must submit a request for an F-1/J-1 Final Semester Reduced Course Load through myIO by the first class day of your graduating semester.
• You may not take more than 1 online class or 3 online credits.
