Do I need an extension?
Is your F-1 I-20 or J-1 DS-2019 expiring this May? Do you need another semester (or more) to complete your graduation requirements? If so, you need to extend your I-20 or DS-2019.
How do I extend my I-20/DS-2019?
First, contact your academic advisor. Ask for their email address and let them know that International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) will send them an email link to confirm your graduation date and the reason you need the extension.
Next, log on to myIO and complete the extension request. You will need both academic and financial information to request the extension.
- F-1 Students: Go to myIO → F-1 Student Services → I-20 Extension Request.
- J-1 Students: Go to myIO → J-1 Student Services → DS-2019 Extension Request.
After you complete and submit your request, double-check that the Academic Verification and Financial Verification e-forms have been fully submitted.
An ISSS advisor will review your documents and let you know when your updated I-20/DS-2019 is ready.
When do I need to do this?
Do it now! Don’t let your I-20/DS-2019 expire. Once your document expires, we can no longer extend it. Please be sure to submit your complete extension request through myIO no later than Friday, April 14.
When will I receive my extended I-20/DS-2019?
Once you submit your extension request through myIO, it will be routed to your academic department for approval. Once your department approves your request and you submit adequate proof of funding for the extension, please allow 10 business days for your I-20/DS-2019 to be extended.
