Are you an F-1 or J-1 student with an internship offer this summer? If so, congratulations! Before you dive in, there’s one important step: Make sure you have the right employment authorization. Here’s everything you need to know.
What kind of authorization do I need for an off-campus internship?
It depends on your immigration status. F-1 students need Curricular Practical Training (CPT), while J-1 students need Academic Training (AT).
F-1 Students: Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
You are eligible for CPT if you:
- Have completed at least two consecutive long semesters in F-1 status* prior to your internship start date.
- Have an internship/employment offer that’s directly related to your UT Austin major.
- Have an academic need for the internship (meaning it’s required for a degree, a course you’re taking, or your dissertation).
*Some exceptions apply. Please see our CPT page for full eligibility details.
How to Apply for CPT
- Read our CPT page to fully understand the requirements and application process.
- Consult your academic department. You’ll most likely need to register for a course.
- Have your employer complete the Employment Verification Form.
- Submit your CPT request through myIO at least three weeks before your internship start date to allow sufficient time for authorization by both your academic department and ISSS.
- Wait for your updated I-20. Once you receive it from ISSS with CPT info on Page 2, you’re cleared to start on your approved CPT start date!
Caution: Don’t start work early! Working before you receive your CPT I-20 or before your approved start date can result in termination of your visa status and/or loss of future immigration benefits.
J-1 Students: Academic Training (AT)
You are eligible for AT if you:
- Have completed at least one long semester in J-1 status before your internship start date.
- Have an internship/employment offer that’s directly related to your UT Austin major.
How to Apply for AT
- Read the Academic Training information on the ISSS website to understand the requirements and application process.
- Submit a request for Academic Training through myIO at least three weeks before your internship start date to allow sufficient time for authorization by both your academic department and ISSS.
- Wait for your updated DS-2019. Once you receive it from ISSS with the AT notation, you’re cleared to start on your approved AT start date!
Note: Sponsored students and reciprocal exchange students have additional requirements. Find that information on the J-1 Employment page.
Caution: Don’t start work early! Working before you receive your updated DS-2019 or before your approved start date can result in termination of your visa status and/or loss of future immigration benefits.
