A Fresh Start:  Language Circles Launch a New Format at ISSS

On the evening of March 11, students gathered in the Global Lounge for the first Language Circles event under a new format introduced by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at Texas Global. The event marked the start of a refreshed approach to language practice that aims to create more engaging conversations and stronger community connections among students at The University of Texas at Austin.

In previous semesters, Language Circles attempted to serve a wide range of languages based on student interest. While this approach allowed for broad participation, it often resulted in very small groups for each language. With only a few participants per group, it could be difficult to sustain dynamic conversations and consistent engagement.

To address this challenge, ISSS worked closely with the Texas Language Center to connect students with additional opportunities across campus. Students interested in languages beyond those offered through Language Circles can now participate in the UT Departmental Language Practice Meetings, where academic departments host conversation sessions led by instructors and advanced speakers.

With this partnership in place, ISSS Language Circles is focusing on three languages this semester: Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish. Korean and Mandarin were identified as languages of interest among the ISSS community, but with limited informal conversation opportunities. Spanish was added after the program saw strong demand from students who wanted more opportunities to practice, particularly with native Spanish speakers.

The kickoff event brought together a varied group of participants. Each circle included native speakers, students currently studying the language, and beginners who were simply curious to learn a few words or phrases. This mix created a welcoming environment where participants could practice in a relaxed setting while learning from one another.

Language Circles also bring together both international and U.S. students from across UT Austin. The program provides a space where students can connect through language while sharing their experiences and perspectives from around the world. Conversations often move beyond vocabulary practice to topics such as culture, food, travel, and daily life.

Throughout the evening, the Global Lounge filled with lively discussion as students rotated between groups, practiced new phrases, and met peers with similar interests. The event highlighted the value of language learning as a tool for building community and fostering intercultural understanding.

The event marked the launch of this new Language Circles model, and ISSS looks forward to continuing to develop the program throughout the semester. By focusing on a smaller number of languages while partnering with campus resources to support others, the program aims to create more meaningful and engaging language practice opportunities for students.

Students of all experience levels are welcome to participate in future Language Circles events. Whether you are a native speaker, actively studying a language, or simply curious to learn something new, we hope you will join us at the next session. We look forward to further developing this model throughout the semester and building a growing community of language learners and cultural explorers.

Interested in joining? Keep an eye on upcoming ISSS events and come practice with us at the next Language Circles gathering. No matter your skill level, everyone is welcome to join the conversation!
