J-1 Employment in the United States After Program Completion

A woman with long dark hair smiles warmly, shaking hands with a blonde woman across a table.

Are you a J-1 exchange student wrapping up your last semester at UT Austin and considering an internship in the United States this summer? Or maybe you’re completing your Ph.D. and hoping to do a postdoc?

Whether you’re here on a reciprocal exchange program or graduating with a UT Austin degree, J-1 Academic Training is the authorization you need to work in the U.S. after completing your academic program in Spring 2026.

What is Academic Training?

Academic Training (AT) is a type of employment authorization for J-1 students. It is designed to give you practical, hands-on work experience directly related to your field of study.

How do I apply for Academic Training?

  1. Read the Academic Training information on the ISSS website to understand eligibility requirements, the application process, and the duration of AT.
  2. Secure an employment or internship offer. The position must be directly related to your UT Austin major and must start on or before June 8, 2026.
  3. Submit your AT request through myIO by April 24, 2026. Once you’ve submitted it, allow up to 10 business days for authorization by your academic department and ISSS.
  4. Wait for your updated DS-2019. Once you receive authorization from ISSS with the AT notation, you’re clear to begin employment on your approved AT start date. You will provide your DS-2019 and AT letter to your employer as proof of authorization to work.

Critical: If this spring is your final semester of study, Academic Training cannot be authorized after May 8, 2026.

I need some more help understanding Academic Training!

For quick questions: Drop by for Express Advising (no appointment needed) at any of these times:

  • Mondays 1-3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesdays 1-3:30 p.m.

For complex situations: Schedule a 1-on-1 appointment.

Congratulations on completing your final semester at UT Austin. Whether your path keeps you in the U.S. or takes you elsewhere, we wish you all the best!
