As you wrap up the spring semester, make sure your immigration documents don’t expire before you graduate. If you need extra time to finish your degree, here’s everything you need to know.
Do I need to extend my I-20/DS-2019?
Check the program end date on your I-20 or DS-2019. If it’s expiring in May 2026 and you need more time to graduate, submit an extension request now.
Important Deadline
If your document expires in May, submit your request by April 17. Starting early gives your department and ISSS enough time to process and issue your extended document before the deadline.
*Critical: We cannot extend documents that have already expired, so don’t delay!
My I-20/DS-2019 expires after May 2026. Can I still request an extension now?
Yes! We now accept extension requests up to 18 months before your program end date. If you already know you’ll need more time, and your academic department can verify the reason and your new expected graduation date, you’re welcome to submit your request now.
The Extension Process: 4 Simple Steps
Understanding how to extend your immigration document may feel overwhelming, but the process is more straightforward than it seems. By following these four simple steps and submitting the required information on time, you can stay on track with your academic goals and maintain your immigration status.
Step 1: Get Verification from Your Academic Department Contact
Reach out to your Academic Advisor, Graduate Advisor, or Graduate Coordinator and get their email address. Let them know that ISSS will email them an automated verification link. They’ll confirm your new graduation date and the reason for your extension.
*This step is essential! ISSS cannot begin processing your request until your department completes the verification.
Step 2: Submit Your Request in myIO
Have your academic and financial information ready:
- F-1 Students: Go to myIO > F-1 Student Services > I-20 Extension Request.
- J-1 Students: Go to myIO > J-1 Student Services > DS-2019 Extension Request.
Step 3: Confirm that Your Submission is Complete
Your request is complete when both your Academic and Financial e-forms are in “pending” status. Incomplete or unsubmitted forms will delay your extension.
- The academic e-form reaches “pending” status once your department has completed it.
- If you’re reporting UT Austin funding, the financial e-form reaches “pending” after your department completes it. If not, it reaches “pending” after you complete it.
Step 4: Wait to Receive Your Extended Document
An ISSS advisor will review your request and email your updated I-20/DS-2019 to your official UT Austin email address. You can expect to receive your new document within 10 business days after your submission is complete — i.e., when both your Academic and Financial e-forms are in “pending” status.
