At The University of Texas at Austin, global engagement is not limited to the classroom. In the Global Living Learning Community (LLC), students build intercultural understanding through everyday interactions that shape their college experience in lasting ways.
The Global LLC is a close-knit cohort of approximately 30 students, predominantly composed of incoming undergraduate and exchange students. This intentionally small community allows students to form meaningful connections early in their time at UT Austin. Living alongside one another as roommates and neighbors, students quickly build a sense of familiarity and belonging within the globally focused environment.
Rather than approaching culture as something abstract, students in the Global LLC engage with one another through daily life. Conversations after class, shared meals, and time spent exploring Austin all become opportunities to learn and connect.
One student said, “Living with roommates from different cultural backgrounds … taught me interesting things about their respective cultures, and I believe I have been able to share things with them, too.”
These everyday interactions often lead to moments of discovery both meaningful and lighthearted. One student reflected on a conversation with their roommate, noting that they were “discovering that Indian and Brazilian parents are a lot alike. Both cultures have similar household traits.”
Others found connection through shared experiences, worlds about but in similar cultures: “We talked a lot about the similarities between Argentine culture and Texan culture. That helped us relate more to each other and find common ground.”
For international and exchange students, the Global LLC can ease the transition to life in the United States. Adjusting to a new academic system and cultural environment can feel complex, but having a built-in community provides support from the start.
Students gain insight into U.S. culture in ways that feel personal and engaging. One student recalled, “My roommate tried teaching me to line dance. I had fun learning about Texan culture!”
At the same time, U.S. students in the Global LLC benefit from exposure to perspectives and experiences from around the world. Students described learning about global traditions and everyday life in other countries. Others highlighted how these interactions deepened their understanding beyond surface-level assumptions, reinforcing the value of lived experience in building cultural awareness.
Living in the Global LLC also supports personal growth. Students frequently mentioned developing skills like communication, adaptability, and empathy. One student explained, “This was my first time sharing a room. It really taught me how to compromise and think of others before acting.”
Programming presented by the Global LLC further strengthens these connections. Social events provide structured opportunities for students to engage with one another in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Whether attending a movie night or exploring Austin together, these experiences help build community. One student noted, “It gave me a space to talk to people I might not have otherwise.”
Through these interactions, students begin to define what a “global community” means to them. One student described “a group of individuals who share their culture and beliefs with each other, living together in harmony.” With a cohort of about 30 students, this sense of community feels tangible and accessible.
Students who have participated in the Global LLC consistently recommend the experience. They highlight the opportunity to build connections early, expand their perspectives, and feel part of a supportive community from the beginning of their time at UT Austin.
