Do you remember your first days at The University of Texas at Austin? Arriving on campus, navigating a new city, meeting new people, and learning your way around the Forty Acres can feel both exciting and overwhelming.
For thousands of international students each year, International Student Orientation is one of their first experiences at UT Austin, and International Orientation Volunteers (IOVs) help make that experience welcoming, memorable, and fun.
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is now accepting applications for the International Orientation Volunteer program. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply to help welcome new international students to campus and introduce them to life at UT Austin during International Student Orientation, which takes place August 14-20, 2026.
Serving as an IOV is an opportunity to build leadership skills, connect with students from around the world, and help foster a sense of belonging for new Longhorns as they begin their journey at UT Austin. Throughout orientation, volunteers play an important role in helping students feel supported as they adjust to a new campus, city, and culture.
IOVs help bring energy and community to orientation week by assisting with events, answering questions, and helping students explore campus and Austin. Volunteers also have the opportunity to share their own experiences and favorite places around the city during creative tours and excursions.
In past years, IOVs have designed and led tours such as “Best On-Campus Study Spots” and “Best Bubble Tea and Coffee Shops Around Campus.” Volunteers have also guided students on outings to Zilker Park, South Congress, downtown Austin, and local grocery stores, helping new students become more familiar with their new home.
There are many ways to get involved as an IOV. Volunteers may:
- Design and lead tours of campus or Austin.
- Assist with social events and orientation activities.
- Lead virtual information sessions or participate in student panels.
- Highlight international student and orientation events on social media.
Whether you are passionate about sharing campus resources, introducing students to Austin, or helping create a welcoming environment, ISSS encourages you to join this year’s team of International Orientation Volunteers.
Visit the International Orientation Volunteers page to learn more about the program. Then apply by Wednesday, June 17, 2026!
